Clothing

We are frequently asked: “What should I wear? And, “how many clothes should I bring?” when traveling, to Taman Negara. Our advice, it’s best to pack a few lightweight and breathable clothing items that work for every kind of adventure—from city touring to wilderness exploring.

Climate in Taman Negara is generally hot and humid throughout the year. Temperatures are in the range between 26°C – 35°C during the day and 24°C – 29°C at night. Therefore, the key is to find a few key pieces you can wear virtually for any activities and during any time of day.

Look for fabrics that are breathable, moisture wicking and easy care. Get the sun-protection clothing features an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating against both UVA and UVB rays. To protect your skin from insects, look for clothing treated with permethrin, an insecticide engineered specifically for fabrics.

Footwear

Having comfortable, durable footwear is an absolute must for everyone, especially when participating outdoor activities. Some of them are recommended when you are visiting Taman Negara. To choose either trekking or hiking shoes, or sandal depends on your activities in the park.

For activities such as Night Jungle Walk, Trekking to Bukit Teresek, and Visiting Kampung Orang Asli, trekking shoes are good option. If you plan to go to Real Inner Jungle, Caving or Gunung Tahan Climbing, it is the best for you to have appropriate hiking shoes with you.

If you like simple and yet suitable for park activities, sandal is a good option. There a few sandals in the market are designed for hiking, trekking and watersports. They are comfort and durable those make you feel more confident and safer. They are suitable for activities like rapid shooting, canopy walkway, and free & easy around Kuala Tahan.

Backpack

Medium Size Backpacks – are designed for multi-day use and for carrying heavier loads than backpacks. It’s ideal for an overnight trip. It would also be sufficient to hold your clothing, tent and sleeping bag.

Large Size backpacks – are designed to be able to hold a substantial amount of kit and will have plenty of pockets for storage. It is well suited for trekking and is a popular choice for those taking part in Taman Negara.

Trekking Poles

Trekking poles are standard equipment for many trekkers in Taman Negara. The reasons why are simple: They enhance your stability and provide support on all types of terrain. They are useful to carry out activities such as Night Jungle Walk, Trekking to Bukit Teresek, Real Inner Jungle, Caving and Gunung Tahan Climbing.

Trekking poles will not decrease your overall energy expenditure since you’ll be using your arms more than you would when walking without poles. They do, however, help distribute your energy usage in a way that can help your hiking endurance.

Most are adjustable in length and some include internal springs that absorb shock to further reduce impact.

Tent

Tent is a basic need if you go for camping either with your friends or family to Taman Negara. There are a few camping sites in Taman Negara, some are easily accessible by car, while the others are far deep in the jungle.

Understand the campsites locations and type of activities help you to choose the right tent.
Among the criteria you should consider before purchase a tent for your activities are: –

1. Tent Capacity – How many people will be sleeping in the tent
2. Tent Weight – Weight you’ll carry if you bring along only the poles, canopy, and rainfly.

Capacity 1-3 person: Suitable for activity such as Real Inner Jungle, Fishing, Climbing Gunung Tahan. The weight is not heavy to manage during hiking on trails.

Capacity 4 – 6 person: Suitable for family camping activities. It is quite heavy, suitable for a campsite close to the car park.

Cooking is very exciting experience either you are camping at organized campsite or on trail to Gunung Tahan peak. Whether you only need to cook a proper or simple meal, having the right cookware is essential.

You need to be able to carry your cookware with ease and it needs to be suitable for your own or your team needs. Actual type and quantity of the cookware are subject to your individual need. However as a guide, see list below;

Flashlight

Flashlights are good choice whenever a handheld light is preferred, to carry activities such as:

  • Night Jungle Walk
  • Real Inner Jungle
  • Gunung Tahan Climbing
  • Camping etc.

Choose the right brightness that is measured in Lumen. Beam intensity, distance and type all influence the effectiveness of a light in different applications. Light output can range from a modest 20 lumens (great for use in tent) to a terrain-scorching 3500 lumens.

Other than that, beam distance, run time, impact resistant and water resistant also is important to have for the activities in Taman Negara. Headlight is also good alternative for you to consider.
